A Century of Commerce

The Beverly Hills Chamber at 100

By Cary Schultz

In 1923, the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce was founded with a vision for the city’s economic and social growth. Now, 100 years later, it stands as an emblem of that vision realized, fostering connections and empowerment for businesses.

As we mark its centennial on November 8, 2023, we honor the pillars of Beverly Hills’ commercial landscape, from the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel to trusted establishments like Mickey Fine and GEARYS. The Chamber’s evolution reflects Beverly Hills’ own journey from a promising locale to a world-renowned hub for luxury and ambition.

Here’s to a century of bridging businesses and building legacies, and to the bright future that awaits.

THE BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL

THE HEARTBEAT OF BEVERLY HILLS AND BEYOND

To the glittering Hollywood elite and savvy world travelers alike, the Beverly Hills Hotel is more than just a place to stay—it's an institution. Since its inception in 1912, even before Beverly Hills was officially a city, the "Pink Palace" has been a symbol of glamour, hospitality, and architectural grandeur. When developer Burton Green and hotelier Margaret J. Anderson envisioned a sprawling Mission Revival-style hotel, they didn't just establish a retreat for the wealthy; they birthed an icon.

"2012 was a significant year for us, marking our 100th anniversary and also becoming the first historic landmark in Beverly Hills," states General Manager John Scanlon. That year also saw the introduction of The Beverly Hills Quarter Century Club, honoring the dedication of team members who have served for more than 25 years. "It is their commitment, passion, and service that has shaped the hotel’s legacy," Scanlon adds.

Through various renovations, including the transformative one in the '40s that gave it the iconic design it boasts today, to celebrating 75 years of its famed Polo Lounge, the Beverly Hills Hotel has managed to consistently reinvent itself without ever losing its classic allure. However, Scanlon emphasizes, "At The Beverly Hills Hotel, we don’t like to focus on innovations or trends. We keep the guest at the heart of everything we do." The hotel's uniqueness lies in creating unforgettable experiences for its patrons, thus becoming a bridge between generations, remaining ever-relevant.

But the hotel's impact extends beyond its well-manicured grounds. "We've created meaningful partnerships with local organizations and charities," Scanlon notes, citing their effort during the pandemic to provide thousands of meals to local first responders, hospital workers, and the less fortunate. The hotel is also a patron of the arts and education, supporting initiatives like the Paul Revere Williams Scholarship and Education Fund to inspire the next generation of architects.

As the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce rings its centenary, the Beverly Hills Hotel sees its role as a cornerstone in the community's prosperity. "Our success is linked to the prosperity of our city and its businesses," Scanlon asserts. Upcoming plans for 2024 include a major project announcement, rotating art exhibitions, and exciting new partnerships, ensuring that this historic gem continues to glitter.

At its core, the Beverly Hills Hotel thrives on its deeply ingrained culture of hospitality. "Our team members genuinely care for our guests and build meaningful bonds," says Scanlon. With over 60 employees serving for more than 25 years, the staff is not just the backbone but the very soul of this esteemed establishment.

As the Beverly Hills Hotel steps into its future, its storied past and unparalleled service ensure its status as an enduring beacon in the ever-changing landscape of luxury hospitality.

GEARYS

TIMELESS LUXURY IN A DIGITAL AGE

In the heart of Beverly Hills, GEARYS has been a symbol of elegance, sophistication, and unparalleled customer service for 93 years. Far more than a retail establishment, GEARYS epitomizes an art form of high-end commerce. President Tom Blumenthal sat down with Beverly Hills Living to share more about their history and impact, "Being around for the past 93 years, there have been lots of pivotal moments. From the Bridal Fairs in the eighties to creating an online presence 10 to 15 years ago, opening up our stores in Century City, Santa Monica, and for Rolex on Rodeo Drive—there have been many pivotal moments."

Blumenthal also highlights innovations such as the Gift Letter Registry Program, created in the nineties. "The gifts are ordered for the couple, and the credit is maintained. After they're married, they can purchase whatever they want, making it environmentally friendly." GEARYS is a brand that other companies often emulate, particularly for ideas like this.

Customer experience is paramount at GEARYS. "When a client comes in, it's all about the experience now," Blumenthal says. "We offer beverages and help curate their own ideas. We'll even help set a table at their home. It's truly a white-glove experience at every level."

Community plays an essential role in the brand's ethos. "We've been involved with the Beverly Hills community for 93 years," Blumenthal notes. "I've been President of the Beverly Hills Chamber and the Rodeo Drive Committee. Community is of the utmost importance."

The future of GEARYS seems bright and ever-evolving. "We'll be remodeling the store in 2025 to keep it fresh and current," Blumenthal reveals. "We've always evolved along with Beverly Hills. We're not just your grandmother's store; we aim to be your store too."

Committed to "keeping relevant while maintaining old traditions," GEARYS represents an exquisite blend of timeless luxury and modern-day practicality. Even in a digital age, Blumenthal maintains, "When you call our store, a human being will answer. I consistently maintain I want somebody greeting people when they come into our stores, welcoming them like you would into your own home." In an era of mass production and automation, GEARYS offers personalized elegance that seems rarer each day.

THE BEVERLY WILSHIRE, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL

A LEGACY OF GLAMOUR AND INNOVATION

From its iconic facade to its movie-star allure, the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, has been a staple of luxury and sophistication in the heart of Beverly Hills since its opening on January 1, 1928. But this is more than a hotel; it's an institution that has continuously shaped the hospitality industry and enriched the Beverly Hills community.

"Needless to say, our storied history and that of the city of Beverly Hills have worked hand-in-hand to ensure the city is a desirable location that people flock to from near and far," notes Reed Kandalaft, Regional Vice President and General Manager.

The hotel's significant historical milestones include the addition of a second wing in 1971, elevating its offering to 395 guest rooms, suites, and specialty suites. Then in 1987, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, signifying its architectural and historical impact. Of course, it gained international prominence as the setting of the 1990 film "Pretty Woman."

The Beverly Wilshire has also been a pioneer in hospitality innovations. "We have introduced many significant advancements and innovations, which have revolutionized the hotel and travel experience," says Kandalaft. Among these are the Four Seasons App, designed to enhance guest experience, and an impressive range of Food & Beverage programming including the MICHELIN-recommended CUT by Wolfgang Puck.

But this illustrious hotel is not just about glamour and innovation. It plays an active role in the community, from board memberships in local organizations to participating in charity events. "We have team members who are on the boards of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, Beverly Hills Conference and Visitors Bureau, Rodeo Drive Committee and Visit California," shares Kandalaft.

As for its future, the hotel recently underwent a multi-million-dollar rooms renovation. Kandalaft also hints at upcoming initiatives: "Next up, we’ll be launching 'The Foodie' experience. We will continue to innovate with our food & beverage as well as Spa programming with the latest in wellness technology." At its core, the success of the Beverly Wilshire is its staff, many of whom have been with the hotel for decades. "Their passion, dedication and tenure allows them to get to know our guests . . . they truly make them feel at home," adds Kandalaft.

As the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce celebrates its centennial, the Beverly Wilshire reaffirms its crucial role in promoting and enriching the community. It's not just a hotel; it's a legacy that continues to redefine luxury, community engagement, and innovation in the hospitality sector.

THE BEVERLY HILTON

A SHINING JEWEL OF BEVERLY HILLS HOSPITALITY

Since its official opening in August 1955, The Beverly Hilton has firmly positioned itself as a cornerstone of Beverly Hills hospitality. This iconic institution boasts a rich legacy, from hosting Hollywood's crème de la crème during red carpet events in its International Ballroom, such as the Golden Globe Awards and the Oscar Nominee Luncheon, to its pioneering innovations in the hospitality scene. As General Manager David Ecija aptly states, "Our hotel is a beacon of history and legacy in Beverly Hills."

A testament to the hotel's innovative spirit is its early adoption of in-room air-conditioning thermostats, granting guests an unparalleled level of comfort. Furthermore, in collaboration with Nostromo Energy, The Beverly Hilton has spearheaded sustainable energy storage systems, marking a monumental stride in the hospitality industry towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

However, it's not just within its luxurious walls that The Beverly Hilton shines. The hotel's commitment to the Beverly Hills community is palpable, with unwavering support to local initiatives and organizations, be it through philanthropy or promoting environmental sustainability. As the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce marks its centennial, The Beverly Hilton stands tall in its partnership, having fostered community growth since its inception. Concluding on a personal note, the true essence of The Beverly Hilton is encapsulated in the myriad success stories of its guests. From hosting A-listers to generations of families returning for their landmark moments, the hotel stands as a nod to legendary hospitality. Ecija fondly shares, "We pride ourselves in the enduring relationships with our guests, ensuring every stay is a cherished memory.”

MICKEY FINE PHARMACY & GRILL

REVIVING TRADITION IN MODERN HEALTHCARE

Mickey Fine Pharmacy & Grill, rooted in Beverly Hills since the 1950s, is more than a pharmacy—it's an iconic historical landmark. It originally started as a sister store to Schwab's pharmacy on Sunset Boulevard. "Today, we remain the only original pharmacy with an old-fashioned soda fountain in all of Los Angeles," states Gina Raphael, the president of Mickey Fine. In 2003, the pharmacy underwent a significant transformation after the sudden passing of Mel Gross, the previous owner. "When Jeff’s father, Mel Gross, passed away, we expanded to multiple locations," recalls Raphael. Demonstrating their commitment to innovation, Mickey Fine now operates seven days a week with three full-time delivery drivers. Moreover, they've launched a vaccination center on Roxbury Drive. "Our most recent initiative is the opening of our vaccination center down the hall from the pharmacy," shares Raphael. The brand's expansion includes pet medications, and they've integrated a restaurant for meals. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Mickey Fine solidified its position as a community linchpin by providing over 25,000 vaccines. "Our motto has always been to support local while supporting the State of Israel," Raphael remarks.

In June 2023, Beverly Hills honored Mickey Fine with a Golden Shield award, signifying its cultural significance. "We are so honored to be part of the history and the future of the City," expresses Raphael. Their enduring relationship with the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, celebrating its 100-year anniversary, attests to their community commitment. "Mickey Fine is truly honored to partner with the Chamber. It shows our commitment to the City and community every day," says Raphael.

With plans to unveil a wellness center, Mickey Fine continues to prioritize community health. "We are excited about our wellness center in suite 105," reveals Raphael. Their dedication is clear with long-serving team members, illustrating Mickey Fine's undying devotion to community service and its legacy as a pivotal community institution.

GREATER LOS ANGELES ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS (GLAR)

NAVIGATING THE FUTURE OF REAL ESTATE

Real estate is a constantly evolving industry, shaping not just skylines but communities. In Southern California, where real estate is akin to a religion, the Greater Los Angeles Association of Realtors (GLAR) has been the steward of this transformation. Founded in 1903, GLAR recently took several momentous strides to centralize its operations by merging with neighboring associations. "This was a huge step forward for the real estate industry in Beverly Hills, as it brought together real estate into one unified organization to give us a stronger voice in the community," explains Thomas Swanson, the 2023 President of the Greater Los Angeles REALTORS®. Central to GLAR's strategy is its 2020 regionalization initiative. "GLAR is now organized into five geographic regions so that we can tailor our services, benefits, and advocacy priorities to the communities in which our members live and work," says Swanson.

Beyond the bureaucratic milestones, the digital revolution has also touched GLAR. Through partnerships with the California Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors, GLAR has been at the forefront of technological advancements like mobile technology and paperless real estate forms. "REALTORS® are now able to be even more responsive to their clients by accessing the MLS from their phones . . . these tools have really made the transaction easier and smoother for all involved," states Swanson.

However, GLAR's influence is not limited to brick-and-mortar or bytes on a screen. The association prides itself on being a benevolent community member through its Charitable Foundation, which has doled out over $182,000 in grants for housing needs, homelessness, and neighborhood improvements. "REALTORS® are good neighbors who volunteer at a rate three times higher than the typical American," boasts Swanson.

As the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce celebrates its centennial milestone, GLAR’s relationship with the Chamber remains an invaluable partnership. "We are proud to work side-by-side with the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce to ensure that the city remains a great place to live and work," explains Swanson. With a focus on advocacy, GLAR also works tirelessly to push for equitable housing policies, such as a motion in 2021 to prevent discriminatory appraisals in Beverly Hills.

As GLAR continues to redefine the real estate landscape, Swanson sums it up best: "We're not just navigating the future of real estate—we're defining it."
