Ava’s Heart
A BEACON OF HOPE FOR TRANSPLANT PATIENTS
By Cary Schultz
Ava's Heart is a distinctive 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, established by heart transplant survivor Ava Kaufman. This charity stands out in its mission to support organ transplant patients, particularly those who face financial challenges in accessing and affording necessary treatments and care.
Recognizing the heavy toll that transplant procedures can take, both financially and emotionally, Ava's Heart is dedicated to filling the gaps left by insurance coverage.
A core mission of Ava's Heart is addressing the healthcare inequity in accessing lifesaving transplant services. A significant barrier for many patients is the requirement for temporary housing near transplant centers, a challenge disproportionately affecting low-income and historically marginalized communities. The organization strives to mitigate this disparity through essential wraparound services, including mandated pre and post-transplant housing.
Beyond financial aid, Ava's Heart provides emotional and psychological support to patients both on the waiting list and post-transplant, recognizing the comprehensive needs of this journey. In partnership with LWMT, it extends support to donor families, acknowledging their vital role and offering assistance with cremation costs.
Looking ahead, Ava's Heart aims to secure sustainable funding, participating in initiatives like the California specialty license plate program. Its housing initiative offers transplant patients and caregivers a 'home away from home,' fulfilling the critical 3-month-post-transplant housing requirement.
In summary, Ava's Heart is more than a charity; it's a crucial support system for those facing the daunting challenges of organ transplantation. By offering financial, emotional and psychological support and tackling healthcare inequity, Ava's heart is making a significant impact in the lives of those in need of transplants, truly embodying the spirit of compassion and community support.
