Feliz Navidad: From San Miguel de Allende
Situated in central Mexico, San Miguel de Allende, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a vibrant town famed for its colonial architecture and art scene, attracting writers, artists, healers, and culture lovers.
You can fly into Mexico City and then take a comfortable 3.5-hour journey on a first-class bus service like Primera Plus or EIN. Alternatively, you can fly directly into Leon, with the charming town only an hour and a half drive away. Whichever route you choose, the destination is an unforgettable retreat at the historic Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond Hotel.
My room, a perfect blend of colonial charm and comfort, immediately enveloped me in the town's unique energy. San Miguel de Allende, sits atop a mountain of rose quartz and is known for its heartwarming aura, which adds to its appeal as a dream destination for magical weddings.
My culinary adventure began at Sazon, the hotel's esteemed cooking school. Here, I discovered the soul of Mexican cuisine, each dish paired perfectly with a local tequila. Venturing into town, I was captivated by the pulse of El Jardin and the striking Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel. Dining at Sollano 18, a haven for meat lovers, was an absolute delight. With its top-quality Wagyu meats and a stunning rooftop view, the restaurant offered a gastronomic experience like no other.
The cultural highlight of my trip was creating traditional Mojigangas, the giant puppets synonymous with local festivities, at a workshop with resident artist Hermes Arroyo. It was an immersive dive into the town's cultural tapestry.
Adding a spiritual dimension to my journey was the ancient Temazcal ceremony. Led by a local shaman, this purifying ritual left me with a profound sense of peace and connection.
As my days culminated at the hotel's rooftop bar, overlooking the iconic San Miguel skyline, I was reminded of the town's captivating energy.
My stay at Casa de Sierra Nevada wasn't merely a vacation; it was an intimate journey into the heart of San Miguel's culture, vibrancy, and unique spirit. These three nights etched themselves into my memory, each moment showcasing the town's enchanting charm.
