A Glamping Escape to the Resort at Paws Up

Arriving at The Resort at Paws Up feels like stepping into a Hollywood Western. Green fields and dark pine forests stretch endlessly, framed by distant mountain ridges. In the middle of it all, a herd of 200 bison graze peacefully, epitomizing the serene beauty of Montana's wilderness. This spring, I spent a long weekend at this bucolic retreat, exploring the 37,000 acres that have been home to commercial cattle ranching since the early 1900s. Intrigued by its staying power, I set out to discover what makes this luxe Montana ranch so special.

One of the most exciting new additions to Paws Up is the moon bike experience. Gliding silently through snowy landscapes on this electric, snow-friendly bike is a unique thrill. For water enthusiasts, the private island on Seeley Lake offers Malibu boats for water sports. Music lovers will appreciate the partnership with Fender Guitars, which brings national musical acts to perform under the stars around a campfire—a truly memorable experience.

Culinary experiences are equally impressive. Chef Brandon's "culinary playground" delights guests with innovative, gourmet dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. The resort’s commitment to accommodating dietary restrictions is commendable, with options for allergies and a strict kosher program. A personal highlight was dining at Trough, where I enjoyed a ginger kombucha mocktail and an out-of-this-world chicken sandwich. At Green O’s Social Haus, the haute cuisine is matched by the stunning forest views from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Guests have a range of accommodations to choose from. For a classic log cabin vibe, there are Meadow Homes, Big Timber Homes, and Wilderness Estates. The recently remodeled Meadow Homes offer a walkable experience with modern comforts. For a more adventurous stay, six seasonal glamping sites open along the Blackfoot River during spring and summer. The adults-only, Scandinavian-style Green O homes provide maximum privacy for couples and friends.

I stayed in Cliffside Camp, a stunning collection of six safari-style tents. The dramatic views from atop a soaring cliff overlooking the confluence of the Blackfoot River and Elk Creek provided a breathtaking backdrop. The VIP setting included a copper tub at the foot of a king-sized bed, a private en suite bathroom, and the luxury of The Last Best Bed. The aesthetic was everything one could want from a Montana ranch getaway, with a welcoming Dining Pavilion and cowboy-inspired art. Each tent came with a camping butler to cater to your every whim, enhancing the feeling of luxury and relaxation as you connect with the great outdoors.

Oh... and the outdoor activities. There is something for everyone. From family-friendly go-kart racing and an aerial ropes course to cattle drives and horseback riding, there's no shortage of adventures. Winter activities include zooming over snow-clad grounds on a MoonBike and dog sledding with Jessie Royer, an Iditarod veteran. Horseback riding is a year-round attraction, with a progressive, thoughtful approach to horsemanship and a mustang rescue and rehabilitation program.

Their commitment to guest comfort is evident in the details. Heated floors, towel racks, and butlers ensure a luxurious stay. Before arrival, a detailed questionnaire ensures every need is met, from dietary requirements to special celebrations. The resort’s concierge team goes above and beyond to create memorable experiences, such as a hot air balloon landing perfectly in front of a guest's camp, followed by a breakfast ready upon landing.
