Hillside Memorial Park & Mortuary

Traditions for a New Generation

Central to Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary’s mission is the deeply held Hebrew value of  "Tikkun Olam," which translates to "healing the world." In fact, a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and dedicated community service has been Hillside’s defining ethos for over eighty years. General Manager Rafael Ochoa passionately explains that this principle is the foundation of their work. "This guiding tenet," Ochoa underscores, "is at the center of everything we do." Located amidst the verdant and vibrant landscapes just outside of Beverly Hills in Culver City, its essence and contributions extend widely across Los Angeles.

Hillside Memorial Park is perhaps best known for its striking monument and cascading waterfall, visible from Interstate 405, marking the resting place of vaudeville actor Al Jolson. Yet, as Ochoa reveals, Hillside's identity extends far beyond its iconic landmarks. "It's about embracing change while holding steadfast to our core values," Ochoa says. And today, Hillside has been navigating the evolving landscape of cemetery and memorial services, particul arly the increasing interest in cremation. "Cremation alone is not disposition," Ochoa emphasizes. "Having a place to rest is critical to the grieving and healing process," he adds, highlighting Hillside's innovative approach to offering cremation property, including one-of-a-kind cremation boulders, garden columbariums, and family cremation estates, encompassed by beautiful gardenscapes and breathtaking water features.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of Hillside's operations, evident in its dedication to future generations. Ochoa proudly speaks of the cemetery's green initiatives, including installing one of the country's largest solar power systems in a cemetery, which produces 67% of the energy Hillside consumes. "We are very, very proud of that.” The park's commitment to environmental sustainability extends to water conservation, relying on well water and working closely with the US Geological Survey Program to ensure responsible usage. "It's about doing our part for the environment, for our families today, and for those in the future," Ochoa explains.

But what truly sets Hillside apart, according to Ochoa, are the core values it espouses: respect, dignity, integrity, diversity, quality, and kindness. These values are not mere slogans but the guiding principles behind every decision and action. "They are the essence of who we are.”

Hillside's support for local organizations underscores its commitment to the community. Partnering with organizations like the Hebrew Union College, Big Sunday, and the Culver City Unified School District, Hillside extends its impact well beyond its gates. Ochoa is especially excited about Hillside's educational initiatives, including a three-part series with American Jewish University focusing on end-of-life conversations. "We're not just a memorial park; we're a part of the community's fabric," Ochoa says, highlighting the importance of supporting those navigating grief through workshops and remembrance services. As a community service of Temple Israel of Hollywood, Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary proudly serves the broader Los Angeles Jewish Community.

Envisioning Hillside's future, Ochoa speaks of ongoing growth and adaptation, always with sustainability and community support in sharp focus. "Our forthcoming events, including the educational series and memorial services, are reflective of our commitment to serve and uplift our community," Ochoa shares. The park's dedication to providing spaces for contemplation and education on topics such as advanced care directives and ethical wills underscores its role as a haven and resource for those navigating the complexities of grief and loss.

Ochoa's reflections paint a picture of a memorial park deeply rooted in tradition yet boldly facing the future. "It's about honoring those who have passed while ensuring we leave a sustainable legacy for those who follow," Ochoa concludes, his voice imbued with a sense of responsibility and hope. It's a tribute to the enduring power of community, sustainability, and respect—values that, according to Ochoa, will continue to define Hillside's legacy for generations to come.
