Since assuming leadership in April 2023, van Leer has championed a dynamic and inclusive approach to the performing arts that mirrors the diversity and vibrancy of Los Angeles. A highlight of van Leer’s tenure this year was his collaboration with board member and legendary director-choreographer, Debbie Allen. Together, they brought Little Amal, a 12-foot puppet representing a young Syrian refugee, to Los Angeles. This significant event was part of a broader initiative to heighten awareness about the plight of global refugees, demonstrating the powerful role that performing arts can play in addressing social issues.

Under van Leer’s guidance, the Wallis has also strengthened its dedication to live music. This season featured exceptional performances from the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, a special engagement with Broadway star Jeremy Jordan, and a vibrant concert from the Alphabet Rockers, a hip-hop group committed to creating socially equitable spaces through their art. Each event under van Leer’s leadership showcased a commitment to embracing a spectrum of musical styles and backgrounds, providing a stage for diverse voices and stories.

Van Leer has cemented the venue’s commitment to the performing arts by establishing multi-year partnerships with 11 renowned organizations across various genres, including designating the venue as the west-side home for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO). He has brought back international theater to the Wallis with performances like “Life & Times of Michael K” and “The Great Yes, The Great No,” creating a central hub for a diverse range of performers and companies, a feat unmatched by any other arts center.

His efforts not only draw a broader audience but also deepen the artistic dialogue within our community. His international experience has brought a fresh and valuable global perspective to the Wallis' programming, development, and vision.

Looking forward, van Leer envisions the Wallis not just as a showcase for the finest in performing arts, but as a beacon for cultural unity and innovation. His strategy promises a future where the Wallis continues to expand its artistic repertoire and community engagement, setting the stage for a transformative impact on Beverly Hills and beyond.
