A Game for All Ages
The Rise of Pickleball
By Cary Schultz
Pickleball, a delightful tennis, badminton, and ping-pong hybrid, has skyrocketed in popularity. While it has been a favorite among seniors for its low-impact play and social aspects, an increasing number of all ages are now drawn to the pickleball court.
A fascinating aspect of pickleball is its unique origin story. Invented on Bainbridge Island, Washington, during the summer of 1965 by three dads, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, it was initially a means to cure their children's boredom. The sport's unusual name supposedly derives from Pritchard's dog, Pickles, who would chase the errant balls. However, Barney McCallum, the last surviving founder, disputes this and claims it was named after the "pickle boat" term from crew rowing.
The rules of pickleball are simple and inclusive, contributing to its appeal. The game is played on a badminton-sized court with a hard paddle and a wiffle ball, making it accessible for beginners yet also a challenge for seasoned pros. A unique characteristic is the "non-volley zone" or "kitchen", a 7-foot zone on both sides of the net where players can't volley the ball.
Pickleball’s rise is evident in the rapid growth of official pickleball clubs and facilities. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) reported that the number of places to play in North America has surged to over 8,000, marking a growth rate of approximately 650% over the past decade.
The allure of pickleball extends beyond its accessible rules and physical benefits. The game fosters a community spirit, offering players the chance to engage in a friendly, competitive environment. Its ability to bring people together is the most potent factor behind its soaring popularity.
Indeed, pickleball is making waves in the sports world, with many schools now incorporating it into their physical education programs and professional tournaments attracting worldwide attention. As the sport continues to evolve and expand, it is creating a lasting impact, changing the landscape of recreational and competitive play.
There is a contagious enthusiasm around pickleball, encapsulating the joy of the sport in its most pure, fun, and inclusive form. The game offers an easy entry point for novices while simultaneously providing a challenging, strategic aspect for experienced players. With the rapid increase in its popularity, it's clear that pickleball is far more than just a passing fad - it's a sport for all ages, and it's here to stay.
