Bay Watch
Nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island, Shelter Island feels like a world apart. Reached by ferry, this tranquil island offers an escape from the bustle of the city, with The Pridwin Hotel waiting to welcome you into its charm-filled embrace.
When my ferry docked on Shelter Island, I knew I was embarking on an adventure. A short drive later, The Pridwin - a charming, family-owned hotel since 1927, became my home base for an unforgettable week.
My days at The Pridwin began with breakfast at their waterfront restaurant, a symphony of local flavors, and eye-popping views over the Peconic Bay. But my culinary highlight? The hotel's Tuesday Night Cookouts. Dining on the day's catch, including delectably grilled swordfish, was an experience I wouldn't trade for the world.
Beyond the hotel's walls, Shelter Island unfolded like a treasure map of experiences. I lost hours in the winding trails of the Mashomack Preserve, a nature's sanctuary that spanned over 2,000 acres—the birdsong, the whispering leaves, the historic Manor House - a tableau of tranquility.
I also ventured to Shell Beach, an off-the-beaten-path gem that lived up to its name. This secluded paradise, accessible only by a narrow dirt road, felt like my own private island within an island.
Embracing the island's nautical spirit, I took a kayak from The Pridwin into Coecles Harbor. The paddle strokes echoed on the water's surface, while the harbor's beauty left a lasting impression.
A bike ride from The Pridwin, I discovered the Havens House Museum, a window into the island's rich history. Stepping into this 18th-century homestead was like traveling back in time, the old-world charm lingering in the air.
As the day waned, I found myself drawn to Sunset Beach. Yes, it's cliché, but believe me, watching the sunset over the calm waters was a postcard-perfect moment that captured the magic of Shelter Island.
At The Pridwin each night, my Shelter Island adventures replayed as dreams. This wasn't just a hotel; it was a doorway to a world of enchanting experiences. And so, I urge you to discover the island magic for yourself at The Pridwin. You'll find more than just a getaway; you'll find an unforgettable story.
