My Visit To Sensei Porcupine Creek

Written by Jessica Varone | Photos by Noah Webb & Chris Simpson

I recently took a step away from the rhythm of everyday life to disconnect and re-focus on my health and wellness after sprinting through the first quarter of the year. I found myself a two-hour drive from LA at the new wellness resort Sensei Porcupine Creek, owned and founded by physician and author Dr. David Agus and Silicon Valley giant Larry Ellison—the 230-acre spread that the hotel now occupies was once the tech magnate’s personal estate, is Sensei's property following the partnership with Four Seasons for its inaugural resort, Sensei Lanaʻi. Nestled in the Greater Palm Springs area against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains, this retreat is an invitation to the discerning wellness traveler seeking an ultra-personalized, science-based approach to well-being.

Upon arrival at the property, I was struck by the Japanese minimalism with the sun-drenched aesthetic of California, including artistic sculptures by Keith Haring and Robert Indiana from Ellison's personal collection, which contrasted the vibrant landscape. And then, at the main estate house, I was greeted with an organic spicy margarita (my favorite), which I forgot I shared in my pre-arrival questionnaire weeks prior.

Then it was time for check-in. The array of accommodation options at Sensei ensures guests have the perfect sanctuary during their stay. My personal haven was a 2,700 sq ft two-bedroom villa nestled along the resort's golf course. Seamlessly integrating into the natural environment, my villa boasted panoramic views of the meticulously manicured lawns and the broader landscape. The villa's spaciousness and comforts make it an ideal choice for families or groups. I couldn't help but envision a future visit with a group of friends or a couple’s retreat, taking full advantage of these delightful abodes.

My villa was outfitted for an extended stay, complete with a state-of-the-art kitchen, a large indoor-outdoor dining room, and an adjacent porch. The thoughtful staff had stocked my snack cabinet with my favorite healthy treats – gluten-free bars, nuts, and fruit. Coming back to a restocked and immaculately cleaned villa after a full day was a luxurious delight. The cherry on top was the nightly turndown service that set the stage for a peaceful evening, leaving me with a printed itinerary for the next day on my nightstand – a thoughtful touch that allowed me to prepare for the day ahead.

The resort's commitment to a science-based approach to wellness was palpable throughout my visit. The first day set the pace for my retreat, starting with a meeting with my designated Sensei Guide, Trevor Tellin, who diligently oversaw my well-being journey throughout the stay.

Cutting-edge technology, such as the SECA body composition analysis machine, was utilized to tailor my wellness journey to my pre-set intentions of de-stressing and achieving ultimate relaxation. We reviewed my itinerary to achieve the “move, nourish, rest” philosophy. Over the next few days, private yoga and tennis sessions, a guided two-hour hike up the Santa Rosa mountains, and an unforgettable therapeutic massage by Stopher were key highlights of my personalized retreat.

Now, onto the dining. The crown jewel is Sensei by Nobu, a gastronomic partnership with acclaimed chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Each meal is a carefully curated experience of fresh ingredients that provide optimal nutritional benefits, adhering to Sensei's Nourish philosophy. The ever-evolving menu combines this philosophy with Nobu's classic dishes, creating a culinary journey that nourishes both body and soul.

The conclusion of my stay was marked by a transformative session with Mindset Guide Dr. Teegan Reeves. We reflected on my key takeaways: independence, finding time for play, nurturing my body through yoga, and incorporating meditation into my daily routine. This focus on thriving and moving forward affirmed the holistic approach to well-being that Sensei Porcupine Creek embodies.

Notably, Sensei’s dedication to wellness doesn't stop when your stay concludes. The post-stay actionable Guide to Growth report, based on your learnings reviewed in the My Plan session, provides a roadmap for continuing your practices at home, ensuring the positive impact of your visit extends well beyond your time at the resort.  If you are seeking a destination to recalibrate, nourish, and inspire your well-being, Sensei Porcupine Creek is the retreat to prioritize on your travel agenda.

I can’t help but believe a stay at Sensei is more than just a retreat; it's an immersive journey in personal growth, wellness, and nourishment across a canvas of luxury and personalization and I can’t wait to go back and with a bigger crew who can see what they’ve been missing.
